Bloody Zippers

I’m going to do some research into zippers, find out who invented them, then either shake his hand and say thank you, or slap him down and say worst invention ever!

The start of our troubled zipper.
The start of our troubled zipper.

Yes, I agree, they are a necessity but really, I think velcro is better. Zippers come in all sizes and for that matter, uses as well…you have your zippers for pants, which is why I would thank the inventor, you have your surgical zippers which are important, then you have the zippers on sleeping bags…which is why I would slap the inventor down, and of course the heavy duty zipper for the tonneau on the camper trailer…which again is why I would slap the inventor down!

Take the sleeping bag zipper, when its warm when the children go to bed while camping, they take great pleasure in turning their sleeping bags into doonas…great for them, but I know full well at roughly 4am, they wake up cold, hence having to struggle with the zipper to turn the thing back into a sleeping bag. This is why, when we go to bed, we turn them all back into sleeping bags then, but still have to struggle with the zipper, a) you can’t see to do the thing up, b) when you get the thing up I always catch a bit of the under side material, then the zipper gets stuck and the swearing quietly begins and c) having to slide their heavy, sleeping bodies into the now closed bag!!! Oh what fun.

Now, the tonneau zipper. Was working perfectly for a very long time, then we travelled through dust, and then I think a little more dust, oh then some more dust…zippers don’t like dust! We have had a few problems, so took the trailer to Creative Covers and Awnings on the Northern Beaches one afternoon for him to look at. He said that the problem was in the slider part, so he unpicked the end, took the slider off, replaced it with a new one, then sewed the end up again, so it wouldn’t come off. He knew exactly what he was doing, and was very fast, factual and professional. I would recommend Richard to anyone who has canvas problems, or zipper problems on their trailers. We got talking and he was glad to work on a camper trailer that has actually been well used, as ours was filthy at the time. He also mentioned that the dust throughout the zipper teeth can, and will cause a problem, so one night while camping, Jas and I painstakingly washed both bottom and top of the tonneau zipper with warm soapy water sacrificing our toothbrushes to do so. Zipper worked beautifully again!

So, yes, I think zippers are a marvellous invention, but on the other hand….they do cause one to use frequent course language at times!!!!
