Fraser Island is approximately 240kms north of Brisbane. The closest point to catch a barge across is Rainbow Beach, this is also the last town to pick up any last minute items you may need and to fill up the fuel tank at mainland prices. You then travel approx. 10-15 mins to reach where the barge leaves from the beach. You can actually see Fraser Island across the channel. It is about a 10 min barge ride across to the Southern tip of Fraser Island at a cost of $180.00 which includes 4WD plus trailer.
Even though it is National Park, there are no fires permitted on the Island. There are camping grounds along the coast and inland, which you need to pre-book through QLD NPWS. Some campsites are fenced, due to the dingo menace, otherwise you can camp anywhere, unless the area is marked off for regeneration.
Yes there are dingos.
